According to Scripture, a pastor is a Shepherd who leads God’s people; the church. He feeds the church with spiritual food; the Word of God. Wouldn’t you want a pastor with a shepherding heart?
And I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. Jeremiah 3:15
Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. Acts 20:28
Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 1 Peter 5:2-3

A pastor according to God’s heart is someone who is:
  • Called by God ~ 2nd Timothy 1:8-8
  • Chosen by God ~ John 15:16
  • Anointed & Appointed by God ~ Acts 20:28
  • Sent by God ~ Romans 10:13-15
  • A man of prayer ~ Matthew 16:41
  • Given to the church by God ~ Ephesians 11-13
  • A man with a vision from the Lord ~ Proverbs 29:18
  • A man who loves God and who loves God’s people ~ 1 Peter 1:22
This list is incomplete, you may think of many more. A pastor after God’s heart is not a perfect pastor. King David was an imperfect man who was after God’s heart. Yet God used him mightily to be the most powerful king of Israel. God used him to write most of the Book of Psalms. And pastors who are according to God’s heart not perfect, but God uses them anyway. That is why as the church we should pray for our pastors, support our pastors, honor our pastors and love them.
Thank you, Lord, for being the Good Shepherd. Help me to reflect your truth and love to others. What ways does your heart need to be transformed to be more like God’s heart?
