Replace Shame With Grace

Have you ever been overcome with shame? The answer to shame is God’s grace. Accept that you made a mistake and ask for forgiveness. Shame is painful, a feeling that’s a mix of regret, self-hate, and dishonor. Feeling ashamed is one of the most miserable feelings.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:1

Maybe like me, the shame of your past pushed you into a pit of despair. I faced judgment from others in and out of the church. The “Biker Chick,” as many have called me, had become my identity.

I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I am His follower, and I am a new creation in Christ. God in His mercy and grace has forgiven me. In His word He declares, He remembers my sin no more.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”2 Corinthians 5:17

Every action of God toward us involves His grace. His creation, His providence, His conviction of the sinner, His gift of salvation, His equipping of the saints, and the future He has prepared for us. All of this is due to God’s grace.

“Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame; For you will forget the shame of your youth, And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore.” Isaiah 54:4

Be strong in God’s grace. Recognize that God is for you. That He wants what is best for you. Trust Him. Believe that He has your long-term best interest in mind. Let go of self, of doing things your way, and of depending on your own resources. As you do, depending on God instead, you will grow stronger in His grace.
