What is a God Wink? An event or personal experience, often identified as a coincidence, so astonishing that it is seen as a sign of divine intervention, especially when perceived as the answer to a prayer.
Remember the TV series, Lassie? I first fell in love with collies while watching this show. Lassie had this majestic look about her covered in a beautiful sable and white coat. Her loyalty, intelligence, and bravery captured my heart. I knew a collie puppy would be in my future.
She was only six weeks old when I met her. I named her Misty; we became instant friends. She was a loyal companion who brought me much comfort and joy. Her faithfulness and unconditional love carried me through the difficult trials that lay ahead.
A misguided search for love and acceptance led me to life inside an outlaw biker gang. One night a rival gang opened fire with M16 rifles on our clubhouse, and I was shot twice.
Just before the shooting started, I could hear Misty running towards me. I didn’t have time to turn around to see her, but I knew she was trying to warn me of the imminent danger.
As the ambulance rushed me to the emergency room, the thought of not knowing if she was safe and that I had to leave her behind gripped my heart. I didn’t think I would ever see my Misty again.
For the next six months, my hospital bed became my home. After numerous surgeries and therapies, it was time to make my way back home. My Dad drove thousands of miles to transport me in a rented station wagon to a local hospital in New Jersey.
Dad visited me every day in the hospital. I diligently worked with my occupational and physical therapists, and I was slowly getting stronger.
On one visit, Dad brought me a miracle. He looked at me with such excitement. “I got a call last night from a gang member in Philadelphia. Misty is at their clubhouse, and I am going to pick her up.” Through tears of joy I asked, “How can that be, and who are you meeting?” All he could tell me was he had the address and was leaving right away to bring her home.
In my heart, I knew this was the most cherished gift from God. I never imagined that I would ever see my precious collie again. How could it be that someone looked after her all these months and knew I would make my way back to New Jersey? I was completely overwhelmed by the goodness of God.
Dad returned to the hospital with the good news. He found the clubhouse and got Misty in the car without incident. Soon she would be home waiting for my return. At that moment, I could not have loved my Dad more. He would take good care of her. Dad always had a sweet spot for Misty.
With Misty waiting safely at home, I was eager to leave the hospital, so I worked hard to complete my therapy. I worried about the trauma and loneliness she experienced while I was gone. Soon I would be able to smother her with love, in the hopes of washing away all of her pain and suffering.
An ambulance transported me back to Dad’s house. As soon as the front door opened, Misty greeted me with hugs, kisses, and happy whimpering. It was the most joyous reunion.
I was content to be alone, safe, and with my Misty. She never left my side, and I know for sure her love and compassion played a crucial role in my healing and restoration.
Misty lived another five years. I will never forget the miracle of being reunited again after the many months and miles that separated us. My amazing collie will always hold a special place in my heart.
