I grew up hearing Dad’s words, “Good Enough.” Although he wasn’t talking about my siblings or me, he sent the message that we did not need new things. He was not concerned about having the latest model or following the latest trends. His philosophy was what we already had, was good enough. He did not understand that new clothes were essential to high school girls.
Emotionally, the result of his “Good Enough” conditioned me never to expect the best of anything. Making any purchase always meant a compromise.
As I experienced more about God’s love for me, I learned it was okay to have earthly possessions. Today their value has lessened while I am storing heavenly treasures.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV)
Storing Treasures in Heaven:
A love for the Word of God
A desire to follow Jesus
An intimate relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Seek after the kingdom of God
Strive to live a life that is holy and blameless, without spot or wrinkle
Run after the high calling of God
Be rich in good works
The things that you treasure here on earth pale in comparison to the treasures in heaven.
God knows you enjoy earthly things. So keep your collections, family photo albums, your car, your home, and prized possessions. You can enjoy these things, but keep your focus on God.
