Expect great things from God; Accept great things from God. 

This was wise counsel to me from my pastor years ago. I will never forget his words of wisdom. I was a new Christian at the time and just the thought of talking with God about my life was an uncommon concept to me. I needed to study up on what my prayer life could and should be.

King David understood the importance of praying with confidence that the Lord’s faithfulness would bring about an answer to his prayers.

“But certainly, God has heard me; He has attended to the voice of my prayer.” Psalm 66:19

James, the brother of Jesus, admonishes us to pray without doubting for he who doubts should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” James 1:5-8

When we sin, we lose confidence in our hearts that God will answer our prayers. The condemnation we feel disqualifies us to receive in faith.

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

So let us go boldly to His throne of grace expecting to receive what we ask for in His name because of God’s loving kindness towards us. He is faithful.

Thank you, Lord, for your faithfulness in not only hearing our prayers, but answering them according to your will.
